About BananAppeal™ Small Anise Tree

Slip something a little unusual and a lot fantastic into your landscape with the BananAppeal Anise Tree from First Editions Plants! This selection brings gorgeous chartreuse yellow and green foliage to the table all year long. Since it’s an evergreen, your garden will be flush with golden yellow hues even in the dead of winter.

It can be difficult to fill shady spots in landscapes and gardens. However, this Illicium provides a solution to this all-too-common problem. This variety is notably shade tolerant! Therefore, the BananAppeal brings its brilliant, luminous tones to where they’re needed most, the shade!

Although it’s technically a tree, the BananAppeal Anise Tree is far more compact than your typical Anise. It reaches a mature size of 3-4′ H x 3-4′ W! This opens up all kinds of uses in the landscape. Try it as an accent, use it in a mixed shade garden, plant it as a small hedge, or use it in a container.

The BananAppeal Illicium is more deer resistant than most landscape plants. However, there’s no such thing as a deer-proof plant so particularly hungry deer may still try to take a bite.

This beautiful yellow shrub is notably fragrant when leaves are crushed or cut. It gives off a notably licorice-like or anise fragrance.

Unlike traditional Anise, the BananAppeal Illicium has never had a ‘sucker’ yet. For those that are unfamiliar with them, suckers are root sprouts that produce new plants from a parent plant.

BananAppeal Anise Tree Care

Hardy from USDA Zones 7-9.

Prefers Partial Sun to Full Shade. Although it is shade tolerant, the BananAppeal Anise Tree will perform best with a small amount of direct sun, or filtered sun, daily.

Plant in moist, rich soil with good drainage for best results.

Water 3-4 times per week for the first growing season to help it establish good roots. Constant root moisture is necessary for this variety to succeed. During the second growing season, watering can be reduced down to 2-3 times per week. Additionally, due to its high moisture needs, we recommend applying a couple inches of mulch yearly.

Fertilize with a slow-release balanced fertilizer in spring to keep the BananAppeal Anise Tree happy and healthy.

BananAppeal Anise Tree Spacing Recommendations

Space your BananAppeal Anise Trees 2-2.5 feet apart for seamless foliage. Alternatively, plant them over 4 feet apart to leave space between shrubs.

I planted two of these trees in a shaded area of my garden near my patio. I love the aroma of this plant, the foliage, the shape and color. This is a remarkable tree!

How fast does the BananAppeal Anise grow?

    • PBM Garden Expert

The BananAppeal Anise Tree tends to have a moderate to fast growth rate. Generally between 13-24″ of growth a year.

A fantastic plant for shady areas with great color providing contrast to darker backgrounds. I’ve planted in in an area that still gets about couple hours of direct/filtered light and it’s doing well (zone 7a).

I read about this plant in Southern Living and immediately wanted one. Plants By Mail did not disappoint! The plant is beautiful in my new shade garden. [PS: The packing and packaging was the best I have even seen with a mail order plant company. Bravo!]
