Description

Slip something a little unusual and fantastic into your landscape with the BananAppeal™ Anise Tree from First Editions Plants! This selection brings gorgeous chartreuse yellow and green foliage to the table all year long. Since it's evergreen, your garden will be flush with golden yellow hues even in winter.

It can be challenging to fill shady spots in landscapes and gardens. However, this Illicium provides a solution to this all-too-common problem. This variety is notably shade tolerant! Therefore, the BananAppeal brings its brilliant, luminous tones to where they're needed most, the shade!

Although technically a tree, the BananAppeal Anise Tree is far more compact than your typical Anise. It reaches a mature size of 3-4' H x 3-4' W! This opens up all kinds of uses in the landscape. Try it as an accent, use it in a mixed shade garden, plant it as a small hedge, or use it in a container.

The BananAppeal Illicium is more deer resistant than most landscape plants. However, there's no such thing as a deer-proof plant so ravenous deer may still try to take a bite.

This beautiful yellow shrub is notably fragrant when leaves are crushed or cut. It gives off a notably licorice-like or anise fragrance.

Unlike traditional Anise, the BananAppeal Illicium has never had a 'sucker' yet. For those unfamiliar, suckers are root sprouts that produce new plants from a parent plant.

BananAppeal Anise Tree Care

Hardy from USDA Zones 7-9.

Prefers Partial Sun to Full Shade. Although shade tolerant, the BananAppeal Anise Tree will perform best with a small amount of direct or filtered sun daily.

Plant in moist, rich soil with good drainage for best results.

Water 3-4 times weekly for the first growing season to help it establish good roots. Constant root moisture is necessary for this variety to succeed. During the second growing season, watering can be reduced to 2-3 times per week. Additionally, due to its high moisture needs, we recommend applying a couple of inches of mulch yearly.

Fertilize with a slow-release balanced fertilizer in spring to keep the BananAppeal Anise Tree happy and healthy.

Care & Use

Getting Started: Understanding Your New Plant

Review your plant's information on our website or the tag that comes with it. Be mindful of sunlight preferences, soil type, and spacing needs.

Planting Instructions

Dig a Hole

First, dig a hole three times the width of the root ball of your plant. This makes it easier for the root system to spread out quickly. Dig the hole deep enough that your plant will sit level with or slightly above the ground around it.

Amend Your Soil

Mix your native soil with rich gardening soil to provide extra nutrients and support plant growth. If your soil is clay-heavy, we recommend mixing your native clay soil with equal parts of Pine Bark mulch to improve drainage and the overall breathability of your soil.

Place Your Plant

Examine the roots. If they appear tightly bound, gently coax them apart; this ensures they can spread into the new soil. Place your plant in the hole so the top of the rootball is even with the surrounding soil—Backfill around it with the amended soil mixture. The roots need access to oxygen for your plant to thrive, so do not cover the rootball; place soil around it.

Mulch Your Plants

Top the soil beneath your plant with 3-4 inches of mulch to help it retain moisture. Be careful not to cover the rootball - your new plants roots need access to oxygen.

Water Your Plant

Soak the plant with a hose afterward to hydrate the plant, as well as get the soil and mulch situated. Develop a regular watering schedule based on your plant's needs and local weather patterns. Remember, over watering is just as, if not more, harmful than under watering.

Spacing Recommendations

BananAppeal Anise Tree Spacing Recommendations

Space your BananAppeal Anise Trees 2-2.5 feet apart for seamless foliage. Alternatively, plant them over 4 feet apart to leave space between shrubs.
