Description

Blue Angel Hosta plant is a shade loving perennial known for its 16" heavily textured blue-green leaves. It produces white bloom stalks with a tint of lavender in the flowers each summer to compliment the gorgeous foliage display. Because of the low sun needs, it can thrive in shade gardens and under trees where lush foliage textures are desired.

Blue Angel's flowers can reach up to 48" tall on mature plants, making them a focal point for your shade garden. Hummingbirds are attracted to those flowers. The tall blooms accent an already wide growing plant that can get up to a 4 foot spread at maturity and 3 feet wide. Space your blue angel hosta about 3 feet apart to create a wash of blue green texture. The leaves are toxic to dogs, cats, and horses.

Some gardeners choose to cut back those bloom stalks in order to encourage foliage growth, which is where hosts really shine. Blue Angel is a low-maintenance Hosta. Remember, this is a shade-loving plant that does best in full shade to part shade. It's hardy in USDA Zones 3-8. It prefers moist soil, so make sure your soil drains well and you water your hosts regularly to encourage growth.

Blue Angel Hosta Care

Plant blue angel hosta in a location that receives mostly shade. This hosta doesn't tolerate full sun. Hostas prefer neutral or acidic soil but prefer a well-aerated medium for best growth.

If grown in fairly fertile soil, you don't need to fertilize it. If you want to use fertilizer, choose a well-balanced fertilizer during the vegetative period. No pruning necessary, but remove yellowed, dead, or damaged leaves. Also, you can deadhead stalks after the blooms wilt.

Planting Instructions

Dig a Hole

First, dig a hole three times the width of the root ball of your plant. This makes it easier for the root system to spread out quickly. Dig the hole deep enough that your plant will sit level with or slightly above the ground around it.

Amend Your Soil

Mix your native soil with rich gardening soil to provide extra nutrients and support plant growth. If your soil is clay-heavy, we recommend mixing your native clay soil with equal parts of Pine Bark mulch to improve drainage and the overall breathability of your soil.

Place Your Plant

Examine the roots. If they appear tightly bound, gently coax them apart; this ensures they can spread into the new soil. Place your plant in the hole so the top of the rootball is even with the surrounding soil—Backfill around it with the amended soil mixture. The roots need access to oxygen for your plant to thrive, so do not cover the rootball; place soil around it.

Mulch Your Plants

Top the soil beneath your plant with 3-4 inches of mulch to help it retain moisture. Be careful not to cover the rootball - your new plants roots need access to oxygen.

Water Your Plant

Soak the plant with a hose afterward to hydrate the plant, as well as get the soil and mulch situated. Develop a regular watering schedule based on your plant's needs and local weather patterns. Remember, over watering is just as, if not more, harmful than under watering.
