Description

The Autumn Sunset® Encore® Azalea is a reliable beauty that lives up to the Encore Azalea name! This selection features single-form, orange-red blooms with a splash of red flecks towards the center of the flower. These blooms are medium-sized, at about 2.5 inches across. Additionally, they're quite prolific, and, like other Encore Azalea varieties, the Autumn Sunset is capable of reblooming up to 3 times a year!

The Autumn Sunset Encore Azalea isn't all blooms though! This variety also features bright green evergreen foliage. Furthermore, its leaves are rounded, and glossy, with almost no leaf hair. This consistent foliage provides the perfect backdrop for its bright flowers to really shine.

The Autumn Sunset has a neat and compact dwarf growth habit that is quite easy to maintain with minimal pruning. At its mature size of 3' H x 3.5' W, it's somewhat reminiscent of a muffin top. This is due to its naturally rounded growth habit.

Use this red-blooming azalea as a specimen, accent, informal hedge, or foundation planting. Otherwise, the Autumn Sunset is also great for containers or mass plantings.

Check out the Autumn Sunset's sibling the Autumn Sunburst Encore Azalea, or take a look at a couple of other dwarf Encores, the Autumn Chiffon Encore Azalea and Autumn Fire Encore Azalea.

Autumn Sunset Encore Azalea Care

Hardy from USDA Zones 6a-10b, down to -10°F once well-established.

Plant the Autumn Sunset Encore Azalea where it will receive 4-6 hours of sunlight a day. If it receives too little sun, it will have reduced bloom and foliage production.

All Encore Azaleas require slightly acidic soil with good drainage to thrive. If you're unsure of your soil pH, pick up a soil tester.

Water at least 2-3 times per week during the first growing season. In the second growing season, provide 1-2 deep waterings per week in average weather conditions. Afterward, provide supplementary water during times of extended drought and heat.

Fertilize 2-3 times each growing season with a slow-release or organic acidic plant fertilizer to promote growth and bloom potential. After the Autumn Sunset Encore Azalea has reached its mature size, it generally only needs one fertilizer application yearly.

Care & Use

Getting Started: Understanding Your New Plant

Review your plant's information on our website or the tag that comes with it. Be mindful of sunlight preferences, soil type, and spacing needs.

Planting Instructions

Dig a Hole

First, dig a hole three times the width of the root ball of your plant. This makes it easier for the root system to spread out quickly. Dig the hole deep enough that your plant will sit level with or slightly above the ground around it.

Amend Your Soil

Mix your native soil with rich gardening soil to provide extra nutrients and support plant growth. If your soil is clay-heavy, we recommend mixing your native clay soil with equal parts of Pine Bark mulch to improve drainage and the overall breathability of your soil.

Place Your Plant

Examine the roots. If they appear tightly bound, gently coax them apart; this ensures they can spread into the new soil. Place your plant in the hole so the top of the rootball is even with the surrounding soil—Backfill around it with the amended soil mixture. The roots need access to oxygen for your plant to thrive, so do not cover the rootball; place soil around it.

Mulch Your Plants

Top the soil beneath your plant with 3-4 inches of mulch to help it retain moisture. Be careful not to cover the rootball - your new plants roots need access to oxygen.

Water Your Plant

Soak the plant with a hose afterward to hydrate the plant, as well as get the soil and mulch situated. Develop a regular watering schedule based on your plant's needs and local weather patterns. Remember, over watering is just as, if not more, harmful than under watering.

Spacing Recommendations

How to Space Your Autumn Sunset Encore Azalea

Space your Autumn Sunset Encore Azalea 2.5-3 feet apart for a seamless planting. Otherwise, plant them 3.5+ feet apart for gaps between plantings.
