Description

The Southern Living Plant Collection presents one of the most phenomenal blooming daylilies around, the Evergreen Stella™ Daylily! This Daylily is particularly coveted for its evergreen foliage and impressive bloom time. The Evergreen Stella™ sends up large fragrant yellow blossoms with ruffled edges from early spring until fall. These vibrant reblooms make this Hemerocallis a truly remarkable perennial that is in bloom far longer than your conventional daylily. Additionally, the characteristic evergreen foliage creates the perfect backdrop for these blooms, and won't leave your landscape looking bare during winter.

Use this daylily for groundcover, edging, mass planting, or an accent planting. Furthermore, consider mass planting the Evergreen Stella™ in a large area that you don't enjoy maintaining. Spring through fall will see a dramatic mass spectacle of blooms, and you'll save yourself time and effort. They also make a compelling companion to taller border shrubs.

This Hemerocallis reaches around 1 ft tall and will spread with time. After several years, you may need to divide your daylilies. After they are divided, you will be left with more plants to re-home with a friend or plant somewhere that could use a little color boost.

Evergreen Stella™ Daylily Care

Plant in Full Sun to Part Shade, in well-draining soil.

The Evergreen Stella™ isn't a heavy feeder and it doesn't require much fertilizer. However, a light feeding in early spring will help them to grow and spread. Alternatively, if you supplement your soil with a couple of inches of compost every year, you will likely not need to fertilize them at all.

This plant has low water requirements, however, make sure that the soil is not drying out a couple of inches below the surface of the soil.

Care & Use

Getting Started: Understanding Your New Plant

Review your plant's information on our website or the tag that comes with it. Be mindful of sunlight preferences, soil type, and spacing needs.

Planting Instructions

Dig a Hole

First, dig a hole three times the width of the root ball of your plant. This makes it easier for the root system to spread out quickly. Dig the hole deep enough that your plant will sit level with or slightly above the ground around it.

Amend Your Soil

Mix your native soil with rich gardening soil to provide extra nutrients and support plant growth. If your soil is clay-heavy, we recommend mixing your native clay soil with equal parts of Pine Bark mulch to improve drainage and the overall breathability of your soil.

Place Your Plant

Examine the roots. If they appear tightly bound, gently coax them apart; this ensures they can spread into the new soil. Place your plant in the hole so the top of the rootball is even with the surrounding soil—Backfill around it with the amended soil mixture. The roots need access to oxygen for your plant to thrive, so do not cover the rootball; place soil around it.

Mulch Your Plants

Top the soil beneath your plant with 3-4 inches of mulch to help it retain moisture. Be careful not to cover the rootball - your new plants roots need access to oxygen.

Water Your Plant

Soak the plant with a hose afterward to hydrate the plant, as well as get the soil and mulch situated. Develop a regular watering schedule based on your plant's needs and local weather patterns. Remember, over watering is just as, if not more, harmful than under watering.
