Description

The Platinum Beauty® Lomandra (Lomandra longifolia ‘Roma13’ PP25962) from the Southern Living Plant Collection is guaranteed to bring phenomenal color and texture to the table. It features long grass-like white-edged leaves with olive green center stripes. This plant grows naturally in clumps with outward stretching leaves that mature to 2' H x 3' W. It's a dynamic addition to mixed garden beds or container plantings. Furthermore, it's fantastic as a mass planting as well.

The Platinum Beauty is notably disease and pest resistant, as well as drought-tolerant. This is a great plant for difficult environments where other plants struggle. Additionally, after it gets going in your landscape, little maintenance is required throughout the year to keep it looking nice and attractive.

Platinum Beauty Lomandra Care

The Platinum Beauty Lomandra is hardy from USDA Zones 8-10. However, we recommend providing winter cover during hard freezes for its first season in the landscape.

For the first 2-3 months after planting water this Lomandra 2-3 times per week. Once established, this plant is water-wise and only needs supplementary water once per week in times of little to no rainfall.

This plant prefers areas that are Full Sun to Part Shade.

Fertilize in early spring with a balanced acidic plant fertilizer. This will help ensure future growth, as well as promote the overall well-being of your plant.

This grass is not picky when it comes to soil types. However, do ensure that it has decent drainage in order to avoid root rot.

If damaged by cold or frost, trim the foliage back to 6-8 inches above the ground in late winter-early spring. Fresh new foliage will flush once spring gets into full swing.

How to Plant the Platinum Beauty Lomandra

First, determine your planting location based on the plant's requirements, refer to the plant tag if unclear. Then, dig a hole three times the width of the rootball of the plant (the root ball is the mass of roots and dirt at the base of the plant that you remove from the pot). The hole needs to be deep enough that the top of the plant’s root ball is even with or just above the ground around it. Mix your native soil with a bag of garden soil or composted manure to provide additional nutrients for your growing plant. If your soil is clay-rich, we recommend mixing pine bark in with your native soil at a ratio of about 1:1 to improve drainage and soil aeration around the plant's roots. Re-fill the hole with your soil mixture. Lastly, soak the new planting to help the soil and plant get situated in the hole.

Companion Plants for the Platinum Beauty Lomandra

It's easy to create stunning texture and color contrast with the Platinum Beauty. Try planting it in a mixed garden bed with the Purple Diamond Loropetalum or Orange Rocket Barberry. Both of these varieties really pop when planted with this Lomandra thanks to their contrasting color and leaf shape.

Planting Instructions

Dig a Hole

First, dig a hole three times the width of the root ball of your plant. This makes it easier for the root system to spread out quickly. Dig the hole deep enough that your plant will sit level with or slightly above the ground around it.

Amend Your Soil

Mix your native soil with rich gardening soil to provide extra nutrients and support plant growth. If your soil is clay-heavy, we recommend mixing your native clay soil with equal parts of Pine Bark mulch to improve drainage and the overall breathability of your soil.

Place Your Plant

Examine the roots. If they appear tightly bound, gently coax them apart; this ensures they can spread into the new soil. Place your plant in the hole so the top of the rootball is even with the surrounding soil—Backfill around it with the amended soil mixture. The roots need access to oxygen for your plant to thrive, so do not cover the rootball; place soil around it.

Mulch Your Plants

Top the soil beneath your plant with 3-4 inches of mulch to help it retain moisture. Be careful not to cover the rootball - your new plants roots need access to oxygen.

Water Your Plant

Soak the plant with a hose afterward to hydrate the plant, as well as get the soil and mulch situated. Develop a regular watering schedule based on your plant's needs and local weather patterns. Remember, over watering is just as, if not more, harmful than under watering.

Spacing Recommendations

Platinum Beauty Lomandra Spacing

To create a seamless border with intertwined foliage, we recommend planting 1 foot apart. For individual plantings where the plant's shape can shine through, space at least 3 feet apart.
