Which Arborvitae Tree should I plant for my Privacy Screen?

The Emerald Green Arborvitae is a classic favorite for Privacy Screens. We recommend this one for those who want a more refined, medium-height screen with essentially zero maintenance required. It maxes out at only 12-14 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide! But if you have serious privacy screen needs and need them yesterday, you will want the Green Giant Arborvitae. This beauty has brilliant green foliage and grows like wildfire, similar to the Leyland Cypress. Once fully established in favorable conditions in the landscape, it can grow 3-5 feet per year! It maxes out around 40-50 feet tall, so it's great for long stretches where you need a tree screen.

Why else might I want to plant Arborvitae Trees?

Arborvitaes serve you, your family, and your landscape.

They Block Out Pollutants

Arborvitaes' dense foliage naturally filters and cleans the air that blows through it. Therefore, they're perfect for blocking and removing pollutants from busy streets next to your yard.

Use them to Buffer the Wind

Create your sanctuary from the storm with a strategically placed Thuja tree screen. They block out the wind beautifully. Furthermore, you can even use them to insulate your house from chilling winter winds.

Arborvitae Tree Screens Dampen Noise

Sick and tired of road noise? Is your neighbor's motorcycle driving you batty? Plant a screen or double screen of Arborvitaes! Their thick foliage absorbs noise beautifully and will give you an excellent evergreen background to enjoy in your landscape.

Arborvitae (Thuja) Tree Planting and Care Tips

Generally, as a rule of thumb, Arborvitaes prefer somewhat moist soil. However, they are vulnerable to root rot, so make sure that water isn't consistently pooling at the base of the plant. If you have drainage issues, add about 8 inches of bark or sand at the bottom of the hole and position your plant's root ball several inches above the soil around it. Then mound garden soil around the root ball. Water your new plantings 2-3 times per week for the first growing season. Apply 3-4 inches of mulch around the base of your plant. Fertilize in early spring with a slow-release nitrogen-rich fertilizer to promote new growth.
