What Are Nandina Shrubs?

Nandina shrubs or heavenly bamboo, are evergreen plants admired for their finely textured foliage, seasonal color shifts, and effortless beauty. Though they resemble bamboo in form, nandina plants are not true bamboo—and the modern varieties we carry are anything but invasive. At Plants by Mail, we offer carefully selected nandina shrubs from the Southern Living Plant Collection, which are non-invasive and bred for compact, controlled growth.

These include the deep red tones of Flirt Nandina, the soft, warm hues of Blush Pink, the vibrant lime-green foliage of Lemon-Lime, and the bold, upright habit of Obsession. Each variety delivers multi-season interest with minimal maintenance, making nandinas a favorite for Southern landscapes, container gardens, and low-hedge designs.

How to Care for Nandina Shrubs

Caring for nandina shrubs is easy. They grow well in full sun to part shade, though varieties like Lemon-Lime appreciate some afternoon protection in hotter climates. Plant in well-drained soil, and water regularly during the first growing season to help roots establish. Once mature, nandina plants are drought-tolerant, pest-resistant, and rarely need pruning—though they respond well to occasional shaping in early spring. These modern heavenly bamboo varieties don’t reseed or spread aggressively, so you get all the beauty with none of the maintenance headaches.

  • Is Nandina the Same as Heavenly Bamboo?

Yes—Nandina and heavenly bamboo are two names for the same plant, Nandina domestica. While it resembles bamboo in its upright growth habit and delicate foliage, nandina shrubs are flowering evergreens. Newer varieties like Obsession, Flirt, and Lemon-Lime offer all the visual appeal of traditional Nandina with none of the invasive spreading.

How Big do Nandina Shrubs get?

Size depends on the variety. Compact types like Flirt Nandina stay around 1–2 feet tall, perfect for edging and borders. Mid-sized types like Blush Pink and Lemon-Lime reach 3–4 feet, while Obsession Nandina can grow up to 4–5 feet tall, making it ideal for low hedging or accent planting.

    Is Nandina Considered Invasive?

Older forms of Nandina, particularly those with berries, have been considered invasive in some parts of the U.S. However, the Nandina plants in the Southern Living Plant Collection—including Blush Pink, Lemon-Lime, Obsession, and Flirt—are noninvasive. These cultivars do not reseed or spread aggressively, making them safe and garden-friendly alternatives to traditional types.

Do Nandina Plants Need Full Sun?

Nandina shrubs thrive in full sun to part shade. Varieties like Lemon-Lime maintain their brightest foliage color with morning sun and afternoon shade in hotter climates. Most types perform well with at least 4–6 hours of sunlight and tolerate light shade, making them incredibly flexible in the landscape.
