Description

The Crimson Fire Loropetalum is a beautiful evergreen shrub from the First Editions collection, known for its striking deep burgundy-red foliage that retains its color all year round. This plant typically grows to a height of 4 feet and a width of 4-5 feet at maturity.

The leaves of Crimson Fire Loropetalum are oval-shaped providing a unique texture and visual interest in the landscape. This plant also produces small, pink fringe flowers in the spring, adding a pop of color to the foliage.

Crimson Fire Loropetalum is a low-maintenance plant that is easy to care for and can be used in a variety of landscaping applications. It is particularly well-suited for use as a hedge, border plant or specimen plant in mixed borders. It can also be used in mass plantings to create a bold, dramatic effect.

How To Plant Crimson Fire Loropetalum?

As with any plant, dig a hole twice as wide as the root system, but not much deeper. When perennials are planted too deep they run the risk of developing root rot due to pooling water.

Loosen the bottom of the root ball with your hands and place it in the hole. Backfill with a mix of the original soil and compost or topsoil. As you are filling, allow the hose to drip in and as you mix the soil and water, a slurry will form that will encourage the roots to settle.

Crimson Fire Loropetalum Care

  • Hardy from USDA Zones 7-9. We do recommend providing winter precautions during hard freezes in the first growing season, i.e. cover with freeze-cloth or a tarp overnight.
  • Prefers full sun to partial shade. However, gardeners in the deep south of the United States should try to shield the Loropetalum chinese fringe flower from intense afternoon sunlight.
  • Grows best in rich, slightly acidic soil with good drainage. Loropetalums may experience root rot when planted in soil with poor drainage.
  • Water 3-4 times per week during the first growing season to help the Crimson Fire Loropetalum improve its chances of long-term success. During the second growing season, supplementary water 2-3 times per week is generally sufficient.
  • Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer, such as 10-10-10, in early spring to promote growth and the overall health of your plant.

        Companion Plants:

        • This selection's bold evergreen color creates a fantastic contrast with many many different types of plants. It pairs well with almost any type of Gardenia, thanks to their bright white flowers and the fact that they grow well in similar conditions.
        • Try planting it with some brilliantly colored evergreens, such as the Lemon Lime Nandina or the Sunshine Ligustrum. Either of these will contrast beautifully with the burgundy foliage of the Crimson fire.

        Planting Instructions

        Dig a Hole

First, dig a hole three times the width of the root ball of your plant. This makes it easier for the root system to spread out quickly. Dig the hole deep enough that your plant will sit level with or slightly above the ground around it.

        Amend Your Soil

Mix your native soil with rich gardening soil to provide extra nutrients and support plant growth. If your soil is clay-heavy, we recommend mixing your native clay soil with equal parts of Pine Bark mulch to improve drainage and the overall breathability of your soil.

        Place Your Plant

Examine the roots. If they appear tightly bound, gently coax them apart; this ensures they can spread into the new soil. Place your plant in the hole so the top of the rootball is even with the surrounding soil—Backfill around it with the amended soil mixture. The roots need access to oxygen for your plant to thrive, so do not cover the rootball; place soil around it.

        Mulch Your Plants

Top the soil beneath your plant with 3-4 inches of mulch to help it retain moisture. Be careful not to cover the rootball - your new plants roots need access to oxygen.

        Water Your Plant

Soak the plant with a hose afterward to hydrate the plant, as well as get the soil and mulch situated. Develop a regular watering schedule based on your plant's needs and local weather patterns. Remember, over watering is just as, if not more, harmful than under watering.
