Description

The Bronze Beauty Cleyera is the most petite cleyera shrub in the Southern Living Plants Collection. Growing to heights of 8-10' H x 5-6' W, this evergreen shrub makes for a fantastic hedge screen. It's much smaller than either LeAnn Cleyera or Bigfoot Cleyera Shrubs

Young foliage on the Bronze Beauty™ starts as a light bronze green and develops into darker metallic-sheen emerald green. At the beginning of fall, the foliage transforms deep green leaves into a breathtaking scarlet bronze that changes the landscape entirely. This plant is receptive to pruning or shearing and will hold shape nicely. Plant the Bronze Beauty in part shade to full sun and slightly acidic soil for best performance.

When your shrub needs a trim, spring will be the best time to do so. Instead of simply shortening the stems from the tips, cut them back towards the center of the plant. Cutting them back to the plant will encourage new side branches to grow and allow them to retain their shape and style, but clipping the tips will encourage bushiness.

Bronze Beauty Care

Hardy from USDA Zones 7 - 10. Once fully established, this shrub is capable of withstanding temperatures between 0° and 30°.

Sun Exposure

Cleyera tolerates full sun but grows best in partial shade environments. You will want to be sure that your soil is rich and retains moisture pretty well, but will also shed off any excess. Soil should also be acidic with a pH within the 5 - 6.5 range. Alkaline soil may lead to a reduction of bronze and green foliage and instead produce foliage with tones of yellow.

If you are looking to make your soil more acidic try one of these!

Watering Recommendations

You will want to place your Bronze Beauty in well-draining, nutrient-rich soil. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a sturdy root system. Alkaline soil is not tolerable for this Cleyera, nor is over-watering. Excess watering will lead to root rot and black spotting of the foliage.

Ternstroemia gymnanthera vs. Japanese cleyera

While both are Cleyera, they are pretty different but equally wonderful broadleaf evergreen shrubs. If you were to look at these plants side by side, you would quickly notice the differences. While the buds of the Cleyera Japonica are sharp and hooked, the buds of a ternstroemia are small and rounded.

Care & Use

Getting Started: Understanding Your New Plant

Review your plant's information on our website or the tag that comes with it. Be mindful of sunlight preferences, soil type, and spacing needs.

Our plants are adaptable but grow best in the correct USDA Zones. Click here to learn more about your USDA Zone.

Planting Instructions

Dig a Hole

First, dig a hole three times the width of the root ball of your plant. This makes it easier for the root system to spread out quickly. Dig the hole deep enough that your plant will sit level with or slightly above the ground around it.

Amend Your Soil

Mix your native soil with rich gardening soil to provide extra nutrients and support plant growth. If your soil is clay-heavy, we recommend mixing your native clay soil with equal parts of Pine Bark mulch to improve drainage and the overall breathability of your soil.

Place Your Plant

Examine the roots. If they appear tightly bound, gently coax them apart; this ensures they can spread into the new soil. Place your plant in the hole so the top of the rootball is even with the surrounding soil—Backfill around it with the amended soil mixture. The roots need access to oxygen for your plant to thrive, so do not cover the rootball; place soil around it.

Mulch Your Plants

Top the soil beneath your plant with 3-4 inches of mulch to help it retain moisture. Be careful not to cover the rootball - your new plants roots need access to oxygen.

Water Your Plant

Soak the plant with a hose afterward to hydrate the plant, as well as get the soil and mulch situated. Develop a regular watering schedule based on your plant's needs and local weather patterns. Remember, over watering is just as, if not more, harmful than under watering.

Spacing Recommendations

Spacing Your Bronze Beauty

In addition to its dense and upright evergreen growth, the Bronze Beauty Cleyera is a fairly fast-growing shrub. In ideal conditions, it is not uncommon for these to add over 3 feet in a year. Because of this fast growth and size potential spacing is an important factor.

For a seamless appearance, you will want to place your Bronze Beauty 4 feet apart. If you are going for an approach that will cover more area you may plant them 7+ feet apart.
