Description
Description
The Ever Amethyst Agapanthus from the Southern Living Plant Collection is a brand-new selection for 2019! This variety is named for its gorgeous amethyst purple blooms that appear in spring and continue to rebloom through summer. These flowers appear on stalks with clusters of beautiful petite blooms. The individual blooms tend to have 6 petals apiece, with the center of the petals containing a dark stripe of purple that fades to light purple on the edges. Expect each plant to produce numerous bloom stalks yearly.
The Ever Amethyst™ Agapanthus is semi-evergreen, which means that warmer USDA Zones will find it to be evergreen and colder Zones will see it as a deciduous perennial. This foliage is thick, elongated, and straplike with a leathery texture. Additionally, it has an attractive bright green hue that goes with just about anything in the landscape or garden.
This is a semi-dwarf variety that reaches about 24-30" H x 12-18" W. It has a naturally clumping habit, so it won't take over your garden. However, as with many perennials, divide your Ever Amethyst Agapanthus every 3-4 years to prevent crowding. Afterward, feel free to replant the separated plants or gift them to a friend.
Use this as a border plant along a walkway, as an accent in a mixed garden bed, in a container, or as a mass planting. Most agree that 'the more the merrier' when it comes to the Ever Amethyst Agapanthus and its plentiful flowers!
Check out a couple other Southern Living Plant Collection Agapanthus varieties, the Queen Mum Agapanthus, Neverland Agapanthus, and the Little Blue Fountain Agapanthus.
Ever Amethyst Agapanthus Care
Hardy in USDA Zones 8-11, down to 10°F when established.
Plant in Part Shade for best results.
Water 3-4 times per week during the first growing season. In the second growing season, provide supplementary water in times of extreme heat and drought.
The Ever Amethyst Agapanthus prefers garden soil with good drainage for best results.
Perennials rarely need supplemental fertilizer, however, 3-4 inches of compost around the plant yearly provides nutrients to keep the plant happy and healthy.
