Description

I Declare Blueberry Bushes are incredibly cherished for their vibrant blueberries and stunning foliage. Gardeners adore them not only for their delectable fruit but also for their captivating appearance. These bushes are perfectly compact, reaching a height of about 3 to 4 feet, which makes them an ideal addition to gardens of any size. The I Declare Blueberry Bushes berries are irresistibly plump, sweet, and flavorful! They are also rich in antioxidants and vitamins, adding a nutritious boost to your diet.

Planting and establishing I Declare Blueberry Bushes involves a few essential steps. From selecting the right location to preparing the soil, these tips will guide you to success.

Choosing the right spot is crucial. Blueberries thrive in acidic soil with a pH between 4.5 and 5.5 and need full sun exposure. Pick a location with at least six to eight hours of direct sunlight daily. Use Espoma Soil Acidifier to adjust your soil pH. If you don't know your soil pH, use our Soil Test Kit to find out what your pH is

Proper soil preparation is key. Mix in compost or well-rotted manure to ensure the soil is well-draining and rich in organic matter. Clear the area of weeds and debris before planting.

Consistent watering is vital, especially during the growing season. Water deeply and regularly, keeping the soil evenly moist. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot. Applying organic mulch around the base helps retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Fertilizing is another crucial aspect. Use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer formulated for blueberries. Apply it in early spring and again in late spring or early summer,  following the package instructions for dosage and application.
Pruning is essential for maintaining the shape and productivity of your bushes. Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead, damaged, or overcrowded branches. Pruning promotes airflow and sunlight penetration,  reducing disease risk. Thinning out branches encourages new growth and improves fruit production.

Preventing pests and diseases is also important. Regularly inspect your plants for signs of pests such as aphids, mites, or fruit worms. If detected, treat them promptly with organic insecticides or insecticidal soaps. Space bushes adequately to ensure proper air circulation and avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal growth. Applying a fungicide during the dormant season can also help prevent diseases.
Adhere to these care and maintenance practices, and your I Declare Blueberry Bushes will flourish, providing you with delicious, healthy berries.

Care & Use

Getting Started: Understanding Your New Plant

Review your plant's information on our website or the tag that comes with it. Be mindful of sunlight preferences, soil type, and spacing needs.

Our plants are adaptable but grow best in the correct USDA Zones. Click here to learn more about your USDA Zone.

Planting Instructions

Dig a Hole

First, dig a hole three times the width of the root ball of your plant. This makes it easier for the root system to spread out quickly. Dig the hole deep enough that your plant will sit level with or slightly above the ground around it.

Amend Your Soil

Mix your native soil with rich gardening soil to provide extra nutrients and support plant growth. If your soil is clay-heavy, we recommend mixing your native clay soil with equal parts of Pine Bark mulch to improve drainage and the overall breathability of your soil.

Place Your Plant

Examine the roots. If they appear tightly bound, gently coax them apart; this ensures they can spread into the new soil. Place your plant in the hole so the top of the rootball is even with the surrounding soil—Backfill around it with the amended soil mixture. The roots need access to oxygen for your plant to thrive, so do not cover the rootball; place soil around it.

Mulch Your Plants

Top the soil beneath your plant with 3-4 inches of mulch to help it retain moisture. Be careful not to cover the rootball - your new plants roots need access to oxygen.

Water Your Plant

Soak the plant with a hose afterward to hydrate the plant, as well as get the soil and mulch situated. Develop a regular watering schedule based on your plant's needs and local weather patterns. Remember, over watering is just as, if not more, harmful than under watering.

Spacing Recommendations

Spacing Recommendations for the I Declare Rabbiteye Blueberry

For a hedge of rabbiteye blueberries, plant them 3 to 4 feet apart center-to-center. However, we generally recommend planting these blueberry bushes at least 5 feet apart to leave space between them for easy picking and maximum sunlight exposure.
