Description
Magnificent white flowers and charmingly sweet aromas are what you get with the Southern Living Plant Collection's Scentamazing Gardenia! This stunning shrub refuses to disappoint and easily becomes a fixture in any landscape.
Petite dark-green rounded leaves provide the stage for the fragrantly creamy white single-form blooms to truly pop. These crisp, white flowers feature six to eight petals and a golden center with six light brown prongs reaching towards the edges of the bloom. The fragrance is nearly universally recognized and unapologetically bold. The seductive, intoxicating scent will remind you of southern summer nights. These classic blooms are ideal for use as cut flowers for fragrant floral displays. Furthermore, expect the Scentamazing Gardenia to begin blooming in mid to late spring and to continue to re-bloom from summer to autumn. Therefore expect to keep your landscape in bloom for much of the year.
The glossy emerald green foliage is evergreen and densely foliated making it a champion in any landscape all year long. The stems are sturdy, soft brown, and accent wonderfully with the light-catching foliage.
The Scentamazing Gardenia is naturally compact, and their reliable growth habit makes pruning unnecessary. Additionally, the Scentamazing only reaches 2-3' tall and 2-3' W, so you don't need to worry about it crowding your garden.
Check out a couple of other popular gardenia varieties, the Frost Proof Gardenia and Jubilation Gardenia.
Scentamazing Gardenia Care Tips
Hardy from USDA Zones 7-10.
Plant the Scentamazing Gardenia in slightly acidic soil with good drainage. Soil that is too alkaline results in yellowing leaves.
Water 2-3 times per week during the first growing season. In the second growing season, water once or twice a week. Shortly after planting, check the soil an hour after watering to ensure that the soil is draining well.
Plant this gardenia in Full Sun to Part Shade. If you are located in hotter zones, such as the southern United States, plant them somewhere where they will receive morning sun and afternoon shade. If you are located in cooler zones, such as the northern United States, plant them in full sun to help ensure their winter survival.
Fertilize once yearly in spring with a slow-release gardenia fertilizer. Otherwise, for organic gardeners, fertilize every 2 months with organic acidic plant fertilizer.
