Description

Magnificent flowers and charmingly sweet aromas are what you get with the Southern Living Plant Collection's Scentamazing® Gardenia! This stunning shrub refuses to disappoint and easily becomes a fixture in any landscape.

Petite dark-green rounded leaves provide the stage for the fragrantly creamy white single-form blooms to truly pop. These crisp, snowy blooms feature six to eight petals and a golden center with six light brown prongs reaching towards the edges of the bloom. The fragrance is nearly universally recognized and unapologetically bold. The seductive, intoxicating scent will remind you of southern summer nights. These classic blooms are ideal for use as cut flowers for fragrant floral displays. Furthermore, expect the Scentamazing Gardenia to begin blooming in mid to late spring and to continue to re-bloom from summer to autumn. Therefore expect to keep your landscape in bloom for much of the year.

The glossy emerald green foliage is evergreen and densely foliated making it a champion in any landscape all year long. The stems are sturdy, soft brown, and accent wonderfully with the light-catching foliage.

The Scentamazing Gardenia is naturally compact, and their reliable growth habit makes pruning unnecessary. Additionally, the Scentamazing only reaches 2-3' tall and 2-3' W, so you don't need to worry about it crowding your garden.

Check out a couple of other popular gardenia varieties, the Frost Proof Gardenia and Jubilation Gardenia.

Scentamazing Gardenia Care Tips

Hardy from USDA Zones 7-10.

Plant the Scentamazing Gardenia in slightly acidic soil with good drainage. Soil that is too alkaline results in yellowing leaves.

Water 2-3 times per week during the first growing season. In the second growing season, water once or twice a week. Shortly after planting, check the soil an hour after watering to ensure that the soil is draining well.

Plant this gardenia in Full Sun to Part Shade. If you are located in hotter zones, such as the southern United States, plant them somewhere where they will receive morning sun and afternoon shade. If you are located in cooler zones, such as the northern United States, plant them in full sun to help ensure their winter survival.

Fertilize once yearly in spring with a slow-release gardenia fertilizer. Otherwise, for organic gardeners, fertilize every 2 months with organic acidic plant fertilizer.

Care & Use

Getting Started: Understanding Your New Plant

Review your plant's information on our website or the tag that comes with it. Be mindful of sunlight preferences, soil type, and spacing needs.

Our plants are adaptable but grow best in the correct USDA Zones. Click here to learn more about your USDA Zone.

Planting Instructions

Dig a Hole

First, dig a hole three times the width of the root ball of your plant. This makes it easier for the root system to spread out quickly. Dig the hole deep enough that your plant will sit level with or slightly above the ground around it.

Amend Your Soil

Mix your native soil with rich gardening soil to provide extra nutrients and support plant growth. If your soil is clay-heavy, we recommend mixing your native clay soil with equal parts of Pine Bark mulch to improve drainage and the overall breathability of your soil.

Place Your Plant

Examine the roots. If they appear tightly bound, gently coax them apart; this ensures they can spread into the new soil. Place your plant in the hole so the top of the rootball is even with the surrounding soil—Backfill around it with the amended soil mixture. The roots need access to oxygen for your plant to thrive, so do not cover the rootball; place soil around it.

Mulch Your Plants

Top the soil beneath your plant with 3-4 inches of mulch to help it retain moisture. Be careful not to cover the rootball - your new plants roots need access to oxygen.

Water Your Plant

Soak the plant with a hose afterward to hydrate the plant, as well as get the soil and mulch situated. Develop a regular watering schedule based on your plant's needs and local weather patterns. Remember, over watering is just as, if not more, harmful than under watering.

Spacing Recommendations

Scentamazing Gardenia Spacing Recommendations

Plant your Scentamazing Gardenias 2 feet apart for continuous foliage. Alternatively, space them 4+ feet apart to leave space in between and let their natural shape shine through.
