The Soft Caress Mahonia is truly JUST right! Classic Mahonias are popular thanks to their great texture, evergreen color, and shade-tolerant nature. However, they’re often quite large and feature stiff, sharp foliage. This is where the Soft Caress comes in.

It is a dwarf variety that matures to only 3 feet high and 3.5 feet wide, AND it has soft feathery foliage. It has a fern-like appearance in the landscape but with a shrubbier substance. This foliage looks good in every season, and if you need some icing on the cake, it produces golden-yellow bloom sprays in late winter.

1. Create a Flashy and Elegant Display for Your Front Door

If you have a shaded or partial sun front door, this plant is a fantastic option! Pictured here, we have an Angyo Star Fatshedera with Soft Caress Mahonia around the base. The wide variegated leaves of the Angyo Star really pop beautifully with it.

For some bonus color and contrast, mix in one or two Buttered Rum Heucherella or some Everillo Carex. Both of these do very well in shaded plantings and are sure to make this container really glow, thanks to the medley of different colors, shapes, and textures.

Whatever you choose to use, create two identical planters and place them on either side of your desired entrance.

2. Use Soft Caress Mahonia as an Evergreen Hedge in a Shady Area

Soft Caress Mahonia is ideal for a low-growing hedge in the shade. Plant them 1.5-2 feet apart and let them grow freely to their maximum size. Their regulated growth rate of only 3 feet tall and 3.5 feet wide won’t crowd your garden. Therefore, this is an ideal choice for gardeners that want their landscapes to be as low-maintenance as possible.

For a taller mixed evergreen border, add a few other elements behind your Soft Caress, such as the Florida Sunshine Illicium and Alabama Beauty Camellia. This assortment will ensure that you have glowing color in every season!

3. Plant a Bold Mixed Garden Bed

The Soft Caress creates dynamic contrast with so many other plants. The dark green consistent foliage is a perfect accent for mixed garden beds. Pair it up with plants that have bright and/or uniquely colored leaves to really put on a show.

Combine them with Hostas and Ferns to create an eye-catching shade garden.

Using them in a partial shade garden? Plant them with Purple Pixie Loropetalum, Elephant Ears, and Hydrangeas to really steal the show.
