Description

The Egao Corkscrew Camellia is a winner in foliage, branches, and blooms. So you could say that it's a bit of an overachiever! Branches grow in twists and loops in an unexpected fashion. This unusual growth habit only becomes more intriguing with age, as older stems mature and younger ones develop. Therefore, a mature plant is truly a sight to behold!

The Egao Corkscrew isn't all branches though. This Camellia features fantastic soft-pink ruffled blooms from late fall to early winter.

These flowers span 2.5-3 inches across and average around 15 petals. They emerge in droves, transforming the appearance of this shrub.

Furthermore, they sit atop glossy, dark green, evergreen foliage. These leaves are a fantastic accent for their characteristic brightly-colored blossoms. Expect it to provide plenty of late-season interest while most of your landscape is getting ready for a winter nap.

This Corkscrew Camellia originally came from a sport of a Camellia sasanqua and Camellia japonica hybrid. Over the next 8 years, propagation and stabilization occurred on 30 different plants. Then the Egao Corkscrew was ready to hit the market, where it rocked gardens the world-over!

Try it out as an accent, specimen, Bonsai, or hedge. We recommend a planting location that will allow a full view of this shrub. For example, a raised garden bed or a large planter.

Plant the Egao Corkscrew with Everillo Carex Grass for a unique container planting.

Reaches a mature size of 6-8' H x 6-8' W.

Egao Corkscrew Camellia Care

This variety thrives in Full Sun to Partial Shade. 4-6 hours a day allows for optimal bloom production. However, gardeners in the Southern U.S. should try to provide the bulk of direct sun in the morning.

Water regularly until well-established, at least the first 3 months. This will allow the roots to penetrate further into the soil, ensuring future success. Afterward, only provide supplemental watering during dry weeks.

Plant the Egao Corkscrew Camellia in rich, well-draining acidic soil for best results. After planting, check frequently to ensure that your plant is neither staying too soggy or drying out.

Fertilize with an acidic plant fertilizer in early spring before new growth has begun to emerge. Additionally, a yearly layer of composted manure will keep your soil enriched over time.

Care & Use

Getting Started: Understanding Your New Plant

Review your plant's information on our website or the tag that comes with it. Be mindful of sunlight preferences, soil type, and spacing needs.

Planting Instructions

Dig a Hole

First, dig a hole three times the width of the root ball of your plant. This makes it easier for the root system to spread out quickly. Dig the hole deep enough that your plant will sit level with or slightly above the ground around it.

Amend Your Soil

Mix your native soil with rich gardening soil to provide extra nutrients and support plant growth. If your soil is clay-heavy, we recommend mixing your native clay soil with equal parts of Pine Bark mulch to improve drainage and the overall breathability of your soil.

Place Your Plant

Examine the roots. If they appear tightly bound, gently coax them apart; this ensures they can spread into the new soil. Place your plant in the hole so the top of the rootball is even with the surrounding soil—Backfill around it with the amended soil mixture. The roots need access to oxygen for your plant to thrive, so do not cover the rootball; place soil around it.

Mulch Your Plants

Top the soil beneath your plant with 3-4 inches of mulch to help it retain moisture. Be careful not to cover the rootball - your new plants roots need access to oxygen.

Water Your Plant

Soak the plant with a hose afterward to hydrate the plant, as well as get the soil and mulch situated. Develop a regular watering schedule based on your plant's needs and local weather patterns. Remember, over watering is just as, if not more, harmful than under watering.
